What’s the Point of an Application, Anyway?

Button, contemplating his application to Pawsylvania university

What is the true point of a college application? This may be a question you’ve asked yourself either out of reflection or perhaps frustration if you’ve started working on your applications. We ask you for the application because you want to get to understand you and get a feeling of the way you may flourish academically and really at USC. We do not have enough time to sit back and talk to every applicant one on one so we ask you to give us a number of information to try and gain an awareness of who you might be. If the content reflects who you are, not just as a student but also as a person as you complete your applications, ask yourselves.

Writing a personal statement is stressful. Up until this point, we’m guessing most school that is high have only written academic papers. You have been expected to evaluate works of fiction, economic trends, historical activities, etc. but likely no one has sat you down and asked one to reveal yourself. Given the goal is to give admission counselors an expression of yourself, be authentic and genuine in tone and content. Write about things that are vital that you you. This is mostly for sophomores and juniors, as seniors have obviously already perfected and written their essays (right!?).

Another important aspect is showing your interest and fit for each school you are applying to. As I’ve mentioned before, you ought to have reasons that are specific you are excited about and applying to a school and convey that through the writing supplements. Even if you haven’t had the opportunity to visit a university, you’ll learn a lot by reading student blog sites and looking at the projects coming out the divisions you are interested in.

We once heard an admission counselor talk about an application being just like a museum. You get to curate the museum to show us all associated with awesome things about your self. By walking through your museum, what things are most important to showcase if you wanted someone to get to know you? Lots of times, individuals are uncomfortable dealing with on their own. This is not about bragging, but rather showing us the best parts of your self you have worked so difficult to cultivate and develop. Show us your accomplishments but also tell us why they matter to you. We’ren’t looking for one specific thing or one kind of person. My part that is favorite of at USC is most of the various kinds of students we have to work alongside!

With our December scholarship deadline that is 1st approaching, make sure you’re taking the time to thoughtfully and thoroughly built an application that displays you into the strongest light possible!

No Shortcuts: Cuz ur not talkin to ur bff

Submitting a college application is a step that is big. I remember sitting at my computer reading the preview of my application over and over. And repeatedly again. I’m not kidding I probably read it over 50 times to make everything that is sure ok.

I didn’t have large amount of direction in this procedures. I didn’t have university guidance counselor, and I was the very first within my family to attend a college that is four-year. But we knew in the most positive way possible that I wanted to put my best foot forward and present myself. I ensured to highlight my greatest achievements and my strongest extracurricular activities. And in my essays I was sure to emphasize my interest in each organization. I was thoughtful about why each university or college ended up being on my list, in order that made it easier to communicate to those institutions as to why I wanted to attend each school.

I made sure my letters of suggestion were submitted on time. We followed up with my instructors to ensure they were sent. Whenever filling in perhaps the simplest elements of the applying like my address and my family information, we capitalized proper nouns and abbreviated words correctly. We know this might sound silly, but after reading several thousand applications, i’m surprised that many students do not adhere to some of those grammar that is simple. I have seen pupils who do not capitalize their road name and others who use the word ‘gotta’ in the place of ‘got to’. I’ve also seen students who submit a solitary paragraph commonapp essay whenever there ought to be multiple paragraphs. You are not texting or emailing your friends. You might be filling out an application for university. Do not take shortcuts.

We was not the kind of student to submit my application on November 1st if the application form ended up being December 1st, I were although I wish. But I was the kind of student who had my application prepared beforehand and we reviewed it countless times to make sure every part of my application had been correct.

My final advice to students who are submitting by the December 1st deadline is to make the application as professional as possible. Avoid any and all errors. Format properly. Don’t rush. Be your self.
